Hey all, I picked up this movie on a whim at the dvd store and I found out it was about the tragedy of Hypatia in fourth century Egypt. Hypatia was one of the most learned women in history, and she was brutally murdred by the Christians of Alexandria, due to her refusal to convert to Christianity and her unorthodox beliefs. Yet even though she and her father were pagans, they were respected by the high ranking Christians of the city because of their learning. This movie was partially funded by the Spanish government and it shows that anyone can be religious fanstics. The movie shows both pagan and Christian fundamentalists and how religion can corrupt and ruin, regardless of whether it's pagan, christian, jewish, muslim, etc. " A historical drama set in Roman Egypt, concerning a slave who turns to the rising tide of Christianity in the hopes of pursuing freedom while also falling in love with his master, the famous female philosophy and mathematics professor Hypatia of Alexandria. Alexandria, 391 AD: Hypatia teaches astronomy, mathematics, and philosophy. Her student Orestes is in love with her, as is Davus, her personal slave. As the city's Christians, led by Ammonius and Cyril, gain political power, the great institutions of learning and governance may not survive. Jump ahead 20 years: Orestes, the city's prefect, has an uneasy peace with Christians, led by Cyril. The Christians enforce public morality; first they see the Jews as their obstacle, then nonbelievers. Hypatia has no interest in faith; she's concerned about the movement of celestial bodies and the brotherhood of all. What place is there?"

Great Movie...it earned a place in my special collection. She was a woman who was true to her convictions and existed in a time when ideas about socially accepted behaviour was changing... the coming of Christianity, over the previoulsy held pagan beliefs.... Is the cycle repeating itself.....? Or is it that seemingly opposing ideas, like life and death are just same sides to the coin, which flips back and forth in the world's timeline....
