Winter Solstice???

I always try to resolve the temperate zone's interpretation of the Wheel of the Year and our tropical experience. In my need to create a Craft with Caribbean traditions, I sometimes reflect on the great waking up of this land we live on at this time. It seems that we have a creative waking up as our artists and creators prepare for the most creative time of the year.
All the island's creative energies are poured into the time between now and Candlemas..... we truly come alive.

In thinking about creating a tradition unique to us, I see this as the awakening time, when we are most in touch with the higher Creative power ....
I also see the period between the Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice as the Festival of Lights...... drawing from Divali and Christmas Lighting up traditions......

I do not know if the Caribbean Wheel of the year can relate to eight Sabbats. But we can definitely relate to the aligning of the Solstices and Equinoxes in the refining of our own Caribbean Tradition....
Any thoughts on this people? Anyone up for a debate?

Runes

There is a whole lot of information out there about Runes and their interpretation. But I shall relate an experience that I had when it came to interpreting those Runes.

Most books give you the pictures of either Viking or Scandanavian runes and a one word meaning.

In the creation of the images though, there was an entire story behind it, sometimes with conditions. Unfortunately, the reall essence of the meanings are lost when reduced to one word.

This site http://www.sunnyway.com/runes/ has some usefull information that is needed when interpreting runes. I think it is very essential to read the entire runic poem and understand the meaning, thinking in the abstract to grasp it. Imagine then, that this alphabet is from an alien race, who attempts to explain their culture to you. Or matbe clearer still imagine trying to explain to ants the concept of indiviuality, when their social stucture is wrapped up in the comunity mind of the nest....

For instance, the rune FEOH in the anglo saxon interpretation reads : Wealth is a comfort to all men;yet must every man bestow it freely,if he wish to gain honour in the sight of the Lord.

This is usually interpreted as wealth alone. but for the Anglo Saxons, the wealth, gained freely, must also be given just as freely. This is something which resonated with me quite significanlty. Wealth, to be attained must also be given. Hoarding it up will cause the flow to dry up.

So for me, there were other conditions to that wealth, and an action implied by recieving the wealth.

Hope you guys get my drift....happy rune reading.

Magick as a tool for Self Transcending Self

In an attempt to transcend yourself/ mind, a practice of magick can be adopted, which would rewire the brain and create a different paradigm to the one previously held. (in your mind).

Our current mental flux, which emanates around this island, creates a “net of consciousness” which has the capability of trapping other individuals who seek to transcend the “net” and their individual minds.

Each Self here is bound by thought patterns and programs, which create the paradigm by which we operate. This is passed on from generation to generation. Our core beliefs about what is, or what is not possible have been stamped and sealed in our minds; and almost nothing that we have learnt speaks to ourselves. We have been programmed in our behaviour and our beliefs. We have been programmed into the “we culture” and “ we ting.”

A friend of mine pointed this out recently. Being from another country, he is not bound by the paradigm placed on us Trinidadians. The reaction and behaviour of Trinidadians is often perplexing to others. The inability to rise above their mental limits is a curious thing. Conversations and behaviour most often have a scripted quality.

In all countries, there are cliques and stereotypes. Individuals attempt to conform to a group, which is closest to their purpose. However, the difference on a small island is that there are a limited number of cliques, limiting the number of choices, which can create a local relative meaning (local to the Self) for an individual. The cliques create their own conscious net, and only very few strong willed individuals can pull away. Almost none of these strong willed individuals are successful in creating a completely new paradigm or clique.

That being said, magick is a useful tool, which allows the individual to rewire his/her brain to transcend personal paradigm/ reality.
According to the author of the blog “Exemplum Stupendous”, magick allows for a new operating system to be introduced into the mind. This system challenges all the previously held beliefs, which the Self held as “Truth.”

It is important though, that the individual recognises those things, which his/her mind responds to, and use them to create a believable dogma or system for the purpose of achieving Self’s goals.

The Self needs to recognise the statements which held them from belief. For example, if the goal is to get a car, and the goal is not forthcoming, then there is a negative belief at the core preventing the flow of energy in Self’s observer created Universe. It is a difficult thing to realize; to purposely change your own beliefs. But it can be done. More on this will be discussed later.

It is absolutely possible, that all the associations, tools listed in Magick to shift belief (paradigm) do not register as “truth” for the individual.
Many of us, in searching for Magick do not ever sift through the wrappings of ceremony and associations to realize that we need to create our own associations. Many practioners and Wiccans would tell you that intuition is more valuable to your mind than regurgitated readings. Intuition; is the thin Golden Thread of thought, which has the beginnings of real belief.

Austin Spare said many times that the system of Magick he created was valid only to his Self. This does not mean that we throw out things and lessons practiced by those gone before. Rather, we absorb, experiment, learn the thing well, and then break all the rules and make our own. Magick needs to speak to you, not to be believed by anyone else. Be as silly and as creative as you wish to be. If you wish to wear a pair of pink fairy wings to create the belief in transcendence, then so be it.

You can find whatever tools are needed.
Listen to your Self.

The Magickal brain- part two

Magick works naturally. We all get that part. It works within the laws of “reality” that we define this world by. Whatever method the universe grants your wish, will seem as natural as going to work in the morning. Only if you are aware of your thoughts constantly then you remember…. “Hey, my spell worked.”

In trying to discover how to make my spells work better. I came upon a great work from an occult writer by the name of Deepak Chopra.
Yes, I feel your double take. But Chopra has been able to unravel the secrets of Alchemy and occult works and uses these in his books.

In his book “The Way of The Wizard” Chopra outlines the process by which a thought becomes reality. There are four levels or bodies to the Human Being.
First is the Causal Body, which is made up of all the belief systems floating around in our store of beliefs. Everything you have been taught to believe is in there…wrong or right it’s in your head, affecting the next level of body…..
Second, the Mental Body that is “manifestation” of the causal body. Our belief systems create our thoughts about what is or is not possible.
The third body is the Emotional body, which of course is the way we react to situations. These reactions are a direct result of our thinking and beliefs.
The final stage then is the physical body, or manifestation of the thing.

Artists and writers go through this process every time a new creation is being birthed. First is a belief, then a thought, then the emotion about the piece, which will bring it to completion or manifestation. That’s why it is easier for a creative person to work Magick. They understand the process intuitively.

Lets apply this to spell working. The possibility of your spell manifesting is relative to
1) Your belief that it is possible
2) Your thoughts that it is possible
3) Your emotions about the issue
If these three steps are not aligned in your mind during the spellcasting..the brainwaves you send out will be like scattered rays in a dark room.

I’ll give you an example.
My quest was to win the recent16 million LOTTO. I lit the candles, created my circle, and imagined my plant familiar’s spirit leaving the plant, and heading to the lotto booth which I buy at to create the winning numbers there. She returned, I thanked her and the elements. I reopened the circle and blew out the candles.

In buying the tickets, I was supposed to again focus on the machine generating the winning numbers, but I became distracted by son number 2……

To make a long story short, I lost focus….the winning ticket was sold in Ellerslie Plaza, but I didn’t buy it…probably the old man who was behind me won it the lucky bugger.

I had to work on the belief that I deserved to win, that I could win and that at least once in your life you must be granted a big sum of money. I had to work on changing my belief.
I shall certainly try this again.

Does Magick Work?

Few years back Oprah Winfrey promoted a book and a movie as the best self motivating tool created in years. Many articles were written on " The Secret"; a book and documentary which encouraged people to claim their wishes and goals, believe that it had already happened, and they would come true."The world is your wishing well" as one author on a similar topic wrote, "Like attracts like" or "Your feelings are vibrations which attract those things to you, which you focus on."
What few people know or realize is the The Secret is sort of an introduction into the principles of Magick.
If only it were so simple. Well it is, and it is not.
The Secret holds that anything you have in your life has been manifested by your past thinking, and anything you want for the future will be manifested by your current thinking. This is not as simple as "positive thinking" as many people have dismissed the lessons in the book as. In order to truly manifest all the things you deem positive in your life, you need to undergo serious analysis of your beliefs and what you think is really possible. And it doesn’t hurt to know that this thinking has scientific eveidence to back it up. Recent studies ( last twenty years or so )in Quantum Physics have shown that this sort of phenomena is possible.
On the simpliest level of matter known…the Quantum Level, quantum particles float around us and everything in the universe. They are even able to pass through objects, and were previously though not to exist. In pre-Christian history, this matter was called ether and was considered the working force behind the prayers and rituals of "magicians." These quantum particles, it has been discovered and tested, respond to human observation in a way that was previously thought impossible.
Quantum Physics has found out that matter and energy have wave-particle properties. This has implications for quantum particles such as electrons, photons and bosons. In the bare basic nutshell, the findings have been that these particles exist in a state of all possibility until the observer (you and me) decide what the particle is and where it is.
Five findings of Quantum Physics are:
Any object which obeys quantum theory can be in more than one place at one time. Its position is smeared out into a probability function.
The act of measuring or observing the quantum object pins it down into a particle state. (ie it existed in a state of all possibility, until it was observed by a human mind and became what that human mind expected)
There is; on the quantum level, an observer-dependent universe.
Quantum objects have the ability to disappear from one place and reappear in another place without crossing the intervening distance. (Electrons jumping from one orbital in an atom to another)
If two quantum particles interact, they remain connected, and re-act to each other’s stimulus even when they are apart.
What do these findings mean for "THE SECRET"?
On the bare basic level of existence, all matter remains in a state of all possibliltiy until we decide what that possibility is. This expectation is limited by what we believe is possible, and in making that decision, we draw upon statements of "belief" which have been drilled into our psyche from day one of our existence, whether they have been true or not. In some cases, we send out mixed vibrations even though we want to believe that it would be the other way around. One example is the wish for doubling our income. For some people, the thought of a monetary increase instantly brings up the other thought "Money is the root of all evil", and they equate wanting more money as something negative.
We also cause indecisive action on the quantum level by our thinking. One example is, on the conscious level, we may be thinking "I really want that new job, the salary and perks are great!" but on the unconscious level we are thinking "..but the responsibility, and the work load are too much for me." This kind of dual thinking causes indecision even at the quantum level.
For Quantum Point number four, we find that things we thought were impossible, can indeed become possible. On the material level, these things manifest themselves through natural channels which we have created through our generations of collective conciousness. Let’s take the wish for a computer, for example, which suddenly comes from a friend who has bought a new one, and offers you their old one. Or the need for a new car, which comes a while later from winning a raffle. These wishes manifest themselves through channels which we believe are possible, because we have mentally created these channels through our beliefs or expectations. Things do not pop out of thin air, or drop from the sky, because we do not believe that way.
Point number five speaks to the transfer of emotional vibrational energy. Everyone we interact with, becomes affected by our stimulus, and in turn can affect others. In some religions, this has been refered to as "transference of spirit." We have all noticed that interaction with one angry person can upset our day. If we are not aware of the source of our upset, it is possible to transfer the angry feeling to the next person we interact with. Whether it comes back to us has not been proven by science as yet, but believers in the "Six degrees of Separation Theory" will conclude that the anger will return at some point. We really need to watch the emotions we share with people and how we share them.
For the purpose of this article, quite a few things have been left out. There is much more to be said about "The Secret" which has not been said. There are indeed further aspects of thought which needs to be analyzed on an individual level in order to make the principles work for us.
For one thing, we are limited by our beliefs and expectations. This statement calls to mind that famous song, "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our mind." We need to realize that our own minds prevent us from achieveing what we want, and if you just snckered thought this whole article; you have already closed off your mind to the possibilities. There is another famous quotation that comes to mind, "Faith can move mountains." Except the mountains which we need to move are the ones that instantly grow up as reasons why we cannot achieve what we want.
If you saw "The Secret" and were skeptical, your mind has already decided that it cannot work. If there was an inkling of belief in the message, then it helps to find where the doubt is and eradicate it through analysis of the negative feeling. This is no small task. Undoing years of belief in one statement requires sometimes going beyond ones beliefs and seeking for other points of view from people who believe quite the opposite. Just making that step fills people with fear. There are too, a whole host of reasons why people cannot make that mental jump. Some people don’t think that they are deserving of happiness. Some people are unable to analyze what is truly important to them.
If you are giving the book a second chance, please also remember to start small. After watching "The Secret" the impulse is always to think big. "I will win the LOTTO!" is the first thing that comes to mind for most people. And then right after declaring that goal, there is a small seed of doubt that we try to toss into our mental wasteland and ignore its presence. If the doubt is there, that’s not the first thing to try. You need to pick goals, small at first, which would help you to build up your belief in the system. If you are going for a big goal, then you need to analyse where that seed of doubt is coming from and work at eradicating it. This is a harder task than the previous suggestion. But the Secret works for many, and it can work for you….if you believe……

Creating A Caribbean Wicca

One of the things that irks me in a magical practice is the methodology and symbolism to use to create a convincing ritual to my subconcious.
See...Magick holds it that all the ritual is just window dressing to fool your subconcious into believing that the ritual for what you wish for actually works. My problem is actually finding believable symbols that work for me.
As an individual of mixed heritage, who has sort of grown up on the fringes of this society, finding believable myths and magical ethos is almost impossible. I am having difficulty relating to any...and I seem to be in a phase of mental jumping.
Candle magic works for me.....and I like to burn stuff. Runes seem too far removed from my psyche, tarot cards go in circles. Objects like knives and wands hold no magical symbolism.
I think I have to invent my own. I cannot look to African faiths, cause I do not consider myself and Afro Trinidadian...neither can I look to European Pre Christain faiths...as I have the same problem there. And the Caaribbean has not synthesised cultures enough to create a unique symbolism that can be used for Magick.........
